When you initially start to get into online marketing and explore the waters a bit, it's not hard to become overwhelmed. As you go through forums and articles, you'll see all types of lists about what it takes to be the next big thing. These lists are going to seem to negate each other. One list will say that becoming successful in IM is all about being patient. Being able to understand business is one more claim often made by these lists. Nevertheless, others will state that creativity is the ingredient to wild and fantastic success. And don't forget about all of the pages telling you that the software package offering there is what will help you become successful in IM.
Here's what's true: All of these things are important (okay, perhaps not the software package, but the other things). Business smarts, creativity and patience are all incredibly important to your success. None of these things will matter much, however, if you are not able to communicate well with your target audience.
Good communication means more than just coming up with a great sales page. A skilled copywriter can handle that aspect of your project. A beautiful site and lengthy FAQ are not what you need for effective communication. A quality web site designer and writer can make those happen. Effective communication calls for being good with interpersonal communication and in straightforward copy as well. So what is it that you need to do?
1. Reply to each and every email you receive within 24 hours of it arriving in your inbox. We aren't joking with you. You don't need to write a novel in the body of each email. All you have to do is write a brief note that says something like "I received your e-mail and will be sending you a full reply shortly." When you do this, try including a a snippet of the original e-mail. This helps the person you email tell your mail apart from the autoreplies that other online marketers employ.
2. Answer your phone. Don't be a call screener. When your telephone rings, answer it by the third ring. Do this even if the Caller ID tells you that the call is from a person that you really do not want to talk to. There's great news about this rule. You do not have to answer your phone 24 hours a day. What you should do is specify clear business hours during which you will be available to answer calls. These business hours should be displayed conspicuously on your website and mentioned in your voice mail message as well. And, most importantly, see to it that you call back.
3. Check with people to be certain that they have gotten your memos, emails, messages, etc. This will show the person that you really care about keeping in contact with them. It will help your clients and purchasers trust you more if you really take the time to ask if they have any questions about your messages so that they can ask you to clear up anything they need clarified.
